Andrew Charlton is the managing director of Aviation Advocacy, an independent air transport-focused strategic consulting and government affairs consultancy based in Switzerland. He is also the Executive Director of Drone Alliance Europe, a group working for intelligent, focused and risk-based regulation for the commercial use of drones.
Andrew has wide-ranging experience and contacts in the legal, commercial and aero-political aspects of all parts of the aviation industry. He has been involved in some of the most major developments in the industry, including be responsible for the world’s first anti-trust immunised metal-neutral airline agreement and saving significant amounts of the aviation industry’s spectrum from being reallocated; creating .aero for the use of the aviation industry and putting in place a European framework for the operation of mobile phones and wi-fi services on-board aircraft. He was closely involved in the changes to the industry’s liability regime and the Cape Town Convention.
Andrew regularly writes about and comments on aviation matters. Aviation Advocacy’s subscription only Aviation Intelligence Reporter is an increasingly influential monthly critique of developments. Its subscribers include senior regulators; airline, ANSP and airport senior executives; and several trade associations.
Previously, Andrew was the Chief Legal Officer of Qantas Airways before being responsible for Government Affairs for IATA and then SITA. Andrew is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
